Tongariro Alpine Crossing

A minimum of 1.5 – 2 litres per person! You must take your own supply of water, the weather can change quite considerably so the more water you carry the better. (There is NO drinking from out of the stream)

This can depend on your walking ability. The trek can take anywhere between 6 – 8 hours.

Temperatures can get into the 20s (Celsius) or minuses (below 0). The weather can be warm and sunny with light wind – but it can also be cold, wet and windy with poor visibility.
That is why it is important to be appropriately clothed and equipped for any change in the weather. You can always turn back.
As you are trekking in alpine conditions and uneven terrain, it is recommended to take:

Adequate Footwear -to support your ankles

Warm Clothing including Jacket – the weather can change rapidly without warning

Food – enough supplies to get you through the day + emergency food supply

Water – at least 1.5 – 2 litres per person &

Sunscreen

Yes! You will need to take your own supply of toilet paper
Toilets are located at the following points:

Start of the trek – Mangatepopo Carpark

Soda Springs – (approx. 45 minutes – 1 hour into the trek)

Ketetahi Shelter – (approx. 3.5 hours from Soda Springs)

20 minutes from Ketetahi Shelter – (towards the end of the walk) and of course

The very end! Ketetahi Carpark

Not extremely fit…. however, you do require a high level of fitness due to the terrain you will encounter. The fitter you are the better experience you’ll have.

NO there are not. What you pack in you must pack out! It is a National Park and you are to leave footprints only

Yes, although while you can complete the walk all year round, outside of the season (May to October) the track is no longer classed as an easy tramping track due to additional risk factors. These can include snow storms, limited daylight hours and the risk of an avalanche. If you are planning on walking the Tongariro Alpine Crossing it is highly recommended that you are guided or a very experienced tramper who is well equipped

It’s important to research and plan, prepare and equip yourself well so you have the right gear and skills required for this trip. Always check the latest information about facilities you plan to use, and local track and weather conditions. If travelling with someone stay together and look after each other.
National Park Shuttles will only operate weather permitting for your safety.
A good indication is to check the MetService weather forecast.

Call 111 in an emergency – if not possible then seek help from people passing by to contact the emergency service and notify your transport provider.

When in phone coverage call or txt message, we can then plan accordingly. Dont panic – we will NEVER leave you behind! We ask that you complete a safety sheet on pickup to ensure we hold your details in an emergency.

There is limited cell phone coverage however coverage is available from the South Crater to Ketetahi Shelter.

After booking your shuttle. Bookings are recommended for all visitors using any part of the Tongariro Alpine Crossing track. There is no cost to book. Go to the Department of Conservation website.

Pick Up Times: 2:00pm, 3:00pm, 4:00pm & 5:30pm
